Study Plan

After payment of the application fee, you will be asked to provide a study plan (within one week of submitting their application) detailing how you intend to balance academics with work, family, and other commitments. This will assist in evaluating your understanding of the time demands associated with medical studies.

Your Application Checklist

The items listed in this application checklist are required to submit your application:

  • All University/College Transcripts

    • These must be certified/official and from all institutions attended.
    • Official transcripts must come directly from the institution or an approved verification service.
    • Uncertified copies sent directly by the applicant will not be accepted.
    • Degrees obtained outside of our five recognized countries (Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Samoa, or the United States, including US territories) require a formal evaluation report from an external service. If one or more of your degrees requires external evaluation, please contact your Admissions Counselor for approved evaluation services. External degree evaluations can take up to two months to process and are required for a complete application, so please allow sufficient time for this step.
    • Please submit all transcripts promptly after starting your application so they may be reviewed before the deadline.
  • Essay

An essay of approximately 1,000 words telling us why you want to become a medical doctor.

  • 3 Letters of Recommendation

Three signed and dated original letters of recommendation, with at least one from a medical doctor. OUM will request the letters directly from your references once the application fee has been paid.

  • Current Résumé or CV

Include your education, work experience, relevant healthcare and volunteer experience (if applicable), and current address.

  • Government-Issued Photo ID

Valid (unexpired), official government-issued photo ID. For example, a driver’s license or passport data page.

  • Non-Refundable $250 Application Fee

The non-refundable Application Fee is $250 and covers the cost of processing your application. It must be paid in order for OUM to contact your references to obtain your letters of recommendation, and to submit your application. The Application Fee is paid in your local currency: Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Samoa, or the US (including US territories).

  • English Proficiency Confirmation

    • This requirement is only for international applicants whose first language is not English and who have not studied in English previously. OUM welcomes students with English as a second language.
    • Since all instruction at OUM is in English, students must be fully fluent in English (speaking, reading, listening, and writing).
    • Candidates whose native language is not English may need to demonstrate fluency by submitting testing results from one of the services that evaluate language proficiency. Candidates whose first language is not English may be exempt from this requirement if their degree is from a university with an English curriculum.
    • OUM accepts the following English tests to confirm English proficiency:
      • IELTS – A minimum score of 7.0 is required overall and in each sub-band.
      • TOEFL iBT – A minimum score of 100 is required.
      • OET – A minimum score of 350 in each of the four sub-tests is required.

English test scores must be submitted directly to admissions@oum.edu.ws from the testing service.

Selection & Interview Process

Admissions Process

The selection and interview process at OUM is a four-step process.

Assessment

Admissions takes a holistic approach to every application, considering the overall quality of an applicant’s academic performance, together with the demonstrated intellectual curiosity, discipline, and empathy that are characteristic of successful medical practitioners.

Screening

If your application has advanced to the selection stage, you’ll meet via Zoom with your Admissions Counselor for a screening interview to discuss your motivation for studying medicine at OUM, academic background, current commitments, financial readiness, and future career goals.

Interview

If selected for a Panel Interview, you will meet with the Admissions Selection Committee. This interview focuses on personal qualities and attributes deemed to be essential to the study and practice of medicine based on internationally accepted criteria for medical school selection.

Decision

The official decision regarding acceptance is typically made within a week after the Panel Interview. Applicants are notified of their acceptance or denial into OUM's MD program via email. You will then work with your Admissions Counselor regarding next steps.
