A Global Team, A Unique Experience

Twenty years ago, OUM’s academic leaders became medical education innovators, merging online pre-clinical study with traditional hands-on clinical training. These distance learning forerunners emerged as global medical educators, evolving today as virtual interactive classroom specialists, bringing cross-cultural medical education to students around the globe who previously had no access to the study of medicine.

    Dr Satupaitea (Satu) Viali is a Specialist Physician and Cardiologist in Samoa. From 2002 to 2008 he was OUM’s Professor and Dean, and in 2007, he was on hand to congratulate OUM’s first graduates. Professor Viali rejoined OUM as Interim Dean of Samoa and the Asia Pacific and Professor of Medicine in May 2023. In addition to his new roles at OUM, Professor Viali is Professor of Medicine, National University of Samoa (NUS) School of Medicine; Cardiologist & Consultant Physician in the Medical Specialist & Cardiologist Practice, Tuloto, Togafuafua, Apia, Samoa; and Visiting Cardiologist and Consultant Physician in the Medical Ward, Cardiology Clinics, and the National Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease Program at TTM Hospital. He has published in peer-reviewed journals on rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease, non-communicable diseases, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and other topics. Dr. Viali earned both his Bachelor of Human Biology and his medical degree at the Auckland Medical School, University of Auckland, New Zealand.

Dr. Aloi’s work has spanned several areas, including natural products chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology, with particular expertise in advanced analytical techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Currently, Dr. Aloi is a Lecturer at the National University of Samoa, a Co-supervisor at Auckland University of Technology, and a Lecturer at OUM.

He holds a Ph.D. in Gender and Health, where his research analyzed global disparities in maternal and child health across 193 countries. Dr Bagade has worked extensively in clinical and academic settings, serving as an Obstetrician-Gynecologist in India, Somalia, and Papua New Guinea, and collaborating with international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). His contributions to maternal health, infertility research, and justice health have shaped policies and improved healthcare outcomes in underserved regions.

    Now serving as a Lecturer in Pre-Clinical Education and Research Advisor at OUM, Dr. Bagade is committed to developing innovative medical curricula, mentoring students, and fostering a global perspective in medical education. His interdisciplinary approach ensures that OUM students receive comprehensive, evidence-based training while also engaging in meaningful, high-impact research that addresses global healthcare challenges.

Holding the prestigious designation of Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), she has demonstrated a commitment to surgical excellence and patient-centered care. Dr. Frederick currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine, where she leads the GI/Renal module for second-year medical students and plays a key role in curriculum development and mentorship. She also practices at the Orlando VA Healthcare System. Previously, she held the position of Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, where she also served as Associate Program Director for the General Surgery Residency Program.

     

    Her academic contributions include numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters in minimally invasive and robotic surgery. Dr. Frederick has received several prestigious awards, such as the Olga Jonasson Teaching Attending of the Year and the Helen O. Dickens MD Alumni Award for Leadership and Service.     Associate Professor Ghahreman is a highly experienced Neurosurgeon in Sydney. He has a particular interest in utilizing minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery and neuro-endoscopy, as he is passionate about the outcomes these techniques can bring patients and their recovery following surgery. He is the Clinical Coordinator for placements for NSW clinical students. In addition to training the future neurosurgeons, Associate Professor Ghahreman ensures that he remains current in neuroscience advances and education.

    Associate Professor Ghahreman is a highly experienced Neurosurgeon in Sydney. He has a particular interest in utilizing minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery and neuro-endoscopy, as he is passionate about the outcomes these techniques can bring patients and their recovery following surgery. He is the Clinical Coordinator for placements for NSW clinical students.
