. . .with an eye to the family dynamic. Many OUM students had wanted to study medicine long before their first day at medical school. But life happened, and the responsibilities and challenges of careers, families, mortgages, geography, and more, interrupted the best-laid plans.
A Curriculum for the Ambitious and Curious
To ensure a smooth admissions process and timely consideration of your application to OUM’s MD program, applicants must submit a complete application with all required documents by the Intake Application Deadline. OUM does not accept incomplete or late applications.
OUM Entry Requirements
Applicants must:
- Have a recognized Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited tertiary institution.
- Have a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, 5.5 on a 7.0 scale, or its equivalent. (If your GPA is below this requirement, please contact Admissions to discuss your qualifications and suitability for our program.)
- Reside in and provide proof of citizenship or permanent residency in Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Samoa, or the United States (includes American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands).
The following are not entry requirements:
- Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)
- Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT)
- Science or Health Major (Not a prerequisite for entry because the basic sciences are foundational to the MD curriculum.)
Study Plan
After payment of the application fee, applicants will be asked to provide a study plan (within one week of submitting their application) detailing how they intend to balance academics with work, family, and other commitments. This will assist in evaluating their understanding of the time demands associated with medical studies.

All University/College Transcripts
- These must be certified/official and from all institutions attended.
- Official transcripts must come directly from the institution or an approved verification service.
- Uncertified copies sent directly by the applicant will not be accepted.
- Some international transcripts may require a formal evaluation report to meet medical school application requirements.
- Please submit all transcripts promptly after starting your application so they may be reviewed before the deadline.
Essay
An essay of approximately 1,000 words telling us why you want to become a medical doctor.
3 Letters of Recommendation
Three signed and dated original letters of recommendation, with at least one from a medical doctor. OUM will request the letters directly from your references once the application fee has been paid.
Current Résumé or CV
Include your education, work experience, relevant healthcare and volunteer experience (if applicable), and current address.
Government-Issued Photo ID
Valid (unexpired), official government-issued photo ID. For example, a driver’s license or passport data page.
Non-Refundable $250 Application Fee
The non-refundable Application Fee is $250 and covers the cost of processing your application. It must be paid in order for OUM to contact your references to obtain your letters of recommendation, and to submit your application. The Application Fee is paid in your local currency: Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Samoa, or the US (including US territories).
English Proficiency Confirmation
- This requirement is only for international applicants whose first language is not English and who have not studied in English previously. OUM welcomes students with English as a second language.
- Since all instruction at OUM is in English, students must be fully fluent in English (speaking, reading, listening, and writing).
- Candidates whose native language is not English may need to demonstrate fluency by submitting testing results from one of the services that evaluate language proficiency. Candidates whose first language is not English may be exempt from this requirement if their degree is from a university with an English curriculum.
- OUM accepts the following English tests to confirm English proficiency:
- IELTS– A minimum score of 7.0 is required.
- TOEFL iBT– A minimum score of 100 is required.
- OET– A minimum score of 350 is required.
- PTE Academic– A minimum score of 72 is required.
English test scores must be submitted directly to admissions@oum.edu.ws from the testing service.
Selection & Interview Process
Amissions ProcessThe selection and interview process at OUM is a four-step process.
Assessment
Admissions takes a holistic approach to every application, considering the overall quality of an applicant’s academic performance, together with the demonstrated intellectual curiosity, discipline, and empathy that are characteristic of successful medical practitioners.
Screening
If your application advances to the selection stage, you will meet via Zoom with Admissions staff for a screening session.
Interview
If selected for an interview, you will meet with the Admissions Selection Committee. This interview focuses on personal qualities and attributes deemed to be essential to the study and practice of medicine based on internationally accepted criteria for medical school selection.
Decision
The official decision regarding acceptance is typically made within a week after the interview. Applicants are notified of the decision via email.

Deferral: Applicants and Accepted Applicants may defer for only one Intake and only to the next available Intake. Accepted Applicants who have deferred who do not wish to register for the next Intake must reapply by submitting a new and complete application.
